“Medigap” is the nickname for Medicare Supplement plans. These standardized plans are specifically tailored to cover the most expensive gaps in Original Medicare coverage in Indiana. Each of these plans is designated with a letter so that you know what benefits you’re getting.

Medicare Part D prescription drug plans

Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D plans are the only plans covering prescription drugs in Indiana. Original Medicare does not, nor do any of the Medigap plans.

So if you want to get the cheapest drugs at the most affordable prices, start with Aetna. The monthly premium plus annual deductible is less than $562 per year. Afterward, you get your drugs for pennies on the dollar until you hit the donut hole.

The next cheapest plan would be Wellcare. Your upfront annual costs are around $635. Then once you hit your deductible, you get lower drug prices.

Don’t assume UnitedHealthcare is the least cheap plan because of the high premium. The lower deductible makes it more affordable than Clear Spring or Humana.

Special Needs plans

Some beneficiaries suffer from chronic illness, which requires specialized health plans. Those plans are called Special Needs Plans (SNPs). Most beneficiaries can only get an SNP through Medicare Advantage in Indiana if their condition is chronic and disabling.

The exception to this is Aetna. You can get an SNP if your disease is either chronic or disabling. It doesn’t have to be both.

All the medical plans in the table below are HMOs, including the one from Humana with the lowest out-of-pocket costs. HMOs are smaller medical networks, but the doctors and hospitals included in that network are usually much less costly.
